Marie Soledad
Marie Soledad (she/they/siya) is a writer, actor, comedian, sensitivity reader and creator of #HourglassSyndrome. Marie is very proud of their identity as a queer disabled mixed race Filipina American. They spent years studying race, culture, queerness, gender, sexuality, and disability from an intersectional feminist perspective to better understand themselves and the world around them. Marie uses their education and experience to create art that discusses the complexities of identity from a personal, cultural, and political perspective.
Marie created the first TikTok videos on the medical condition Hourglass Syndrome, also known as Stomach Gripping, and is the creator of the viral #HourglassSyndrome hashtag that has over 15M views on TikTok. The viral hashtag has influenced hundreds of people to share their stories with this condition and has been featured on Buzzfeed, NY Post, USA Today, and countless health and wellness blogs.
Since then, Marie’s Tiktok @itsmariesoledad has amassed 21.3k followers and over 1M likes on their videos discussing everything mentioned above, plus autism, pop culture, and sizeism, through their unique comedic and analytical perspective. When they’re not using humor to get their point across or pontificating on things no one asked about, Marie uses this platform to share their personal struggles as a disabled artist.
Marie has done sensitivity reading on the topics of race, culture, queerness, gender, sexuality, and disability for the following companies: POPSUGAR, JASH, America’s Test Kitchen, BeWoke.Vote, Youngblades, and BOOM! Studios.
In their new Substack newsletter SICK FUCK/GOOD HEART, Marie gets even more intimate and explicit about their life, including their sexuality and experience with mental illness (specifically depression and suicidal ideation).
